Nació en Lisboa en 1975; en donde vive y trabaja. Estudió en la Escuela Maumaus de Bellas Artes; en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Lisboa estudió escultura; y se formó en fotografía en esta misma capital.
Gran parte de los videos, instalaciones y fotografías de Vasco Araújo son una refl exión sobre el arte como refl ejo crítico de la sociedad y como espacio privilegiado de las relaciones que se establecen entre verdad y artifi cio, así como entre el individuo y los otros.
Su obra ha sido exhibida ampliamente en Europa y Estados Unidos. Recientemente expuso en el Museo do Azulejo (Lisboa), en la Galería Gabrielle Maubrie (París, Francia) en el Oak Park de Chicago (Estados Unidos) y el la 51 Bienal de Venecia. Ha sido artista residente en el centro Les Récollets en París, en Core Program del Museo de Bellas Artes de Houston y actualmente en el Baltic Art Center en New Castle.

En “O’Jardim”, Vasco Araújo, a partir de una serie de fragmentos de diálogos extraídos de la Iliada y la Odisea de Homero, construye un enigmático relato que podemos relacionar con una actualidad desconcertante. Los personajes, dos mujeres y tres hombres, son encarnados por una serie de estatuas de bronce que se encuentran en el Jardín Tropical de Lisboa. Este lugar fue creado con el fi n de apoyar la colección agronómica de plantas llamadas “exóticas” y “decorado” con estas estatuas que representan a los habitantes de las antiguas colonias portuguesas en África.
Esta obra hace referencia a esa relación conflictiva con el pasado colonial, a la necesidad de una relectura de la historia que también tenga en cuenta las construcciones en el imaginario y sus repercusiones en lo real. El diálogo que se establece entre los personajes se desarrolla en cuatro tiempos, que van desde la curiosidad frente al otro, el miedo a la alteridad, al desafío, hasta la hostilidad de parte de los hombres y la hospitalidad de parte de las mujeres que lo acogen.
Hospitalidad que representa, como señala Derrida, el modelo del lazo social, una forma elemental de la actitud ética. La presencia del recién llegado permite evocar una historia específi ca de un imperio colonial que ya no lo es pero que debe asumir su derrota y su responsabilidad frente a la historia. “O’Jardim” hace evidente la complejidad de las relaciones, entre extranjeros y nativos, y problematiza acerca de la presunta homogeneidad de las sociedades en las que han tenido que instalarse los recién llegados.
