Juan Manuel Echavarria nació en Medellín en 1947. Vive y trabaja entre Bogotá y Nueva York.
La fotografía y el video son los medios que utiliza para transmitir su reflexión acerca de la violencia en Colombia.
Ha participado en diferentes festivales de medios audiovisuales, entre los que se destacan Human Rights Watch Film Festival, University of California, Estados Unidos, 2007; en el 2006, Recontre Internationale Paris - Berlin, Musée Jeu de Paume, Painting Ruins, Kabul, Afganistán, y otros en La Cinemateca Francesa, El Teatro Paris-Villette, El Cinema l’Entrepot, El Cinema du Monde, en París. Algunos de sus videos son: Bandeja de Bolívar, Bocas de Ceniza y Guerra y Pa. Ha participado en numerosas exposiciones individuales y colectivas, entre ellas la Bienal de Venecia, en Italia; VOIX OFF en el Centro Regional de Arte Contemporáneo, Francia; The Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee, Universidad de Kansas, Estado Unidos; MoMA Documentary Fortnight; Museo de AluCine; Toronto Latino Film y El Festival de Video de Canadá, donde presentó igualmente el video Bocas de Ceniza.
También ha expuesto en la Galería Josee Bienvenu, New York; en la Americas Society, New York; en el Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, Carolina del Norte y en Foto Fiesta, Houston, Texas; en el Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Montevideo, Uruguay; el Museo de Arte Moderno Irish, en Dublín, Irlanda y en ARCO 06’.

En esta serie de siete videos del artista colombiano Juan Manuel Echavarría pone en evidencia, una vez más, con una austeridad ejemplar, los estragos que causa en la población civil un conflicto político y social como el que vive Colombia.
“Bocas de Ceniza” nos confronta con un grupo de personas desplazadas por el conflicto armado que cantan, cada una a su manera y a capella, su propia historia. Relatos que cumplen con una función fundamental, no solo de orden catártico para el que lo interpreta y para el que lo escucha, sino también de escritura de la historia. La historia de una guerra en la que no hay vencedores; todos hacemos parte del bando de los vencidos en medio de los escombros de un tiempo perdido para siempre.
En “Bocas de Ceniza”, estos trovadores contemporáneos transmiten directamente, a través de la canción, el testimonio de una crisis humanitaria sin precedentes en el país y podemos comprobar, como señala Marc Augé “que el poder de las palabras es necesario cuando el que vio se dirige a los que no han visto.”1. De esta forma, la fuerza de la enunciación descubre una faceta
inédita del enunciado.
El título de la obra hace referencia a la desembocadura del emblemático río Magdalena que atraviesa el país de sur a norte. Esta trayectoria lo convierte en una especie de testigo omnipresente del realismo trágico que agobia a los habitantes de las diferentes regiones por las que pasa. Lejos estamos de la época en que el Magdalena era llamado Yuma; atrás quedaron las ferias, el comercio y las piraguas que en la región de Barrancabermeja hacían de aquel una arteria fluvial importante para los ribereños. El río “amigo” (signifi cado en español de Yuma) lleva en su caudal los restos de su propia destrucción, que van a parar en las Bocas de Ceniza para ser expulsadas en el mar.
La obra de Juan Manuel Echavarría nos muestra cómo el arte es una de las pocas posibilidades que nos quedan para crear intersticios entre el terror y el escape, espacios de reflexión y debate que permitan cuestionar nuestra posición frente a lo real.
