La mayor parte del trabajo artístico de Tatzu Nishi tiene que ver con las alturas. En Ghent, encapsuló la estatua del Cristo de la plaza de Santa Ana, construyendo alrededor una habitación de hotel. En Liverpool, una dama de alta alcurnia, la estatua de la Reina Victoria, corrió con una suerte semejante y terminó abrigada en un palacete donde la gente podía tocarla. En Colonia, construyó una sala alrededor de la monumental y centenaria estatua ecuestre del emperador alemán Guillermo II. Cuando el público, después de subir una escalera, ingresaba a esta particular morada, no podía más que sorprenderse al encontrar la cabeza de la otrora omnipotente imagen convertida en un inofensivo adorno posado sobre una mesa de té. Para lograr estas intervenciones construye un complejo sistema de andamios por los que el público puede acceder a estas casas en el aire.
¿La razón? No puede explicarla muy bien. Cuando este japonés llegó a Europa, le sorprendieron esos monumentos graves, solemnes, pétreos, con su afán de trascendencia. Allí estaban, regados por su geografía e historia desde los tiempos de la estatua ecuestre de Marco Antonio en la Roma Imperial gritándole al mundo su sed de eternidad. Al pertenecer Tatzu a una cultura oriental, que no maneja este tipo de simbología civil ni religiosa, los pudo mirar con ojos nuevos. Los vio a pesar de su pompa, insólitos, inermes, indefensos, mudos, solos. Y empezó a reinsertarlos en los rotos mapas urbanos, con instalaciones que obligan a una nuevalectura desacralizadora, juguetona aunque nunca irrespetuosa. En ella, estos monumentos se vuelven protagonistas de otro libreto distinto al original con el que fueron creados. Abandonan la calle para la que fueron concebidos y se convierten en domésticos habitantes de cálidas habitaciones, en las que el público puede mirarlos por primera vez de tú a tú, en un libreto que en todos los casos es el mismo espectador quien termina por completar

Tatzu Nishi es un artista japonés que vive hace 20 años en Alemania. Además de estas intervenciones a los monumentos públicos, realiza grabados. Pero son estas instalaciones las que han recibido reconocimiento de la crítica internacional. "No me interesa el arte para especialistas- dice Tatzu-. Quiero que le llegue a la gente y por eso hago lo que hago". Tampoco le interesa mucho la autoría y la reta al cambiarse cada 2 años de nombre. "Mi nombre original en japonés no lo entienden en Occidente. Por eso me puse cualquiera. Y al tener cualquier nombre tampoco importa que me lo cambie cada dos años". En la actualidad esta transformación de su nombre se ha convertido en parte de su proyecto artístico, en una vía muy acorde con el interés contemporáneo por cuestionar la autoría de la obra de arte.
